A double-width house is another type of prefab house and is not built on site. That's why there are a lot of customization options available. These houses can be moved anywhere you want, as they consist of two sections, joined together to create a larger house. Mobile homes come in a variety of sizes, as do prefab homes. Some mobile homes are considered “single-width”, meaning they are generally between 8 and 12 feet wide.
They can have as little as 400 square feet of living space inside. Prefab homes that meet the requirements will be considered “double width”, be no less than 20 feet wide and have no less than 600 square feet of living space inside. Single-section mobile and prefabricated homes are built on a steel chassis and are transported whole to the property. Multi-section houses, such as double-width houses, are also built on a steel chassis, but are connected to each other at the site of origin. A double width will have two sections.
A triple width will have three. Before deciding if a single or double width prefab house is right for you, it's important to know the difference between these two floor plans. The main difference has to do with the way the house is built. A single-width house is built in a long section.
However, a double-width house must be built in two separate sections and joined together on site to make a larger house. Double-width prefab houses are usually twice the size of single-width houses wide. A double width also differs from a single width because of its larger square area, larger size of land or lot, longer configuration process, higher costs, and greater difficulty in moving. A prefab house was built after June 15, 1976, when the Prefab Housing Construction and Safety Regulations Act came into effect.
Both modular and prefab houses are factory-built, but there are important differences between them. The most important distinguishing feature between a prefab house and a mobile home is the state of its base. Therefore, what in the past was considered a single-width motorhome no longer meets the construction standards that constitute a single-width prefab house today. For a manufactured home to be eligible for funding from NLC Loans, it must be located on land owned by the person who owns the manufactured home.
While prefab homes can be more difficult to customize than traditional homes, there are still plenty of opportunities for renovations and extensions, especially in a two-width home. While a mobile home is different from a prefab home, the two terms are used interchangeably here in Mobile Home Living. There are some double handcuffs in the community that only have a front door and a small door in the back, so I imagine that the difference between modular and double width is that one has three entrances to the house and the other only two.
